Rapid Tooling

Providing fast and good quality low-volume production to our clients.
With the Rapid Tooling and Injection Mould Tooling.

What is Rapid Tooling?

Rapid tooling, another name is bridge tooling or prototyping tooling. It’s a rapid manufacturing process to make your low-volume parts. Generally, the tool is made by soft tools to catch up with your project lead time and the cost will be relatively economical. A rapid tool involves hand-load inserts, stocked mold base, and mold material. The mold material could be either aluminum or soft steel. The mold’s function is the same as the large volume tools, it’s available in multiple cavities, family cavity and so on.

The Advantages of Rapid Tooling

There are still minor differences between rapid tooling and production tooling. The advantages aas below:

  • Promotes Innovation: Rapid tooling is a good manufacturing option for some clients, especially for customers who are doing very important new product development. You might need hundreds or thousands of parts to do a whole series of testing, to make sure your product on functions about hardness, corrosion resistance, color, glossy, materials or designed outline etc are safe and satisfied with all your ideas. So rapid tooling is the perfect way to meet all your requirements. And the molding making time is not as long as the production mold tool.
  • Save Time: Since rapid tooling is made by soft material such as aluminum, it saves a lot of time on machining.
  • Profitable: The part made by rapid tooling, and the production manufacturing, no matter the material or the process are the same. So before embarking on a costly tooling processing due, test findings can assist you in determining what improvements are required and profitable.

What are Rapid Tooling Included

There are 3 steps to make a good quality rapid mold tool:

  1. CNC machined mold tool. The tool is made by a CNC machine with rough cutting and fine cutting. Depends on the plastic injection molding requests, sometimes it needs to make some post-finishing to the CNC mold, such as hardening treatment.
  2. EDM texture on the mold or inserts. Some special text might not be achieved by CNC machining, then it needs EDM to make it on the mold or the inserts.
  3. When the mold is done, it needs to be put on the injection molding machine for mold trial to test shot pressure and timing. After repeated experiments and inserts adjustment, the engineers find the best’s way to make the parts. That means the mold tool is completed.

How DOMI Guarantees Mold Tool Quality

DOMI Prototyping is the expert on CNC machining. We have full experience in how to design mold tools and make the molds by CNC machining. When you contact us with your CAD file, we will review the product, design the mold, make it keep all the nice surface of your parts and make it easy to manufacture.
